The Early Childhood section of the ISS caters for children aged between 3 and 7 years.
WELCOME!
Welcome to the Early Childhood section. We have 186 children in the section at the moment in Classes Reception 1 through to Year 2.
This part of the school website will give you a brief look around the Early Childhood section.
In January 2008 we moved into a new spacious, purpose-built Early Childhood building.
Since that time we have introduced a two form entry and the section is settling into their new learning environment.
As the year progresses and things get more organized we will be updating our section information on the ISS website.
Current staffing is shown below:

We have a wonderful bunch of happy and motivated children who come from many different countries of the world. We hope you can come and visit us one day!

SECTION AIMS
Children in Early Childhood (3-7 years) have particular and unique requirements. These needs, and the characteristics of this age group, determine the provision of the Early Years curriculum.
Play is essential to a child’s intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and emotional development and therefore is valued as being a child’s work.
Children bring a variety of experiences and competencies to the school setting. We build on their existing achievements by maintaining high expectations. We recognise that the parents are the first educators and they are encouraged to continue to be involved in a variety of ways.
Children are active participants in their education.
The aims of the Early Childhood section are:
- To develop the school’s policy and practice at an appropriate level for the understanding of children in the Early Childhood Section
- To plan, resource and implement a clearly focussed, developmentally appropriate Early Childhood curriculum which takes account of early skills and concepts identified in the UK National Curriculum
- To provide a well planned, child-centred learning environment where the child feels safe and secure
- To ensure that children are given opportunities to develop their learning through play-based activities
- To facilitate learning through appropriate quality adult interaction, observations and individual assessment.
- To liaise closely with parents/carers, to welcome them in school and to encourage a strong partnership between home and school.
- To encourage children to develop independence.
- To encourage children to explore and experiment, be creative, make choices and decisions, and to experience success and pleasure in learning.
- To develop language and numeracy competence.
- To develop positive self images in children.
- To develop an awareness and respect for the culture and lifestyles of others.
- To develop a sense of belonging and community.
- To develop the ability to relate positively to an increasing number of adults and peers.
- To develop a child’s ability to resource activities and use equipment and supplies in a responsible manner.
Our primary goal is to meet the educational needs of all children, taking into account their social and cultural backgrounds and different rates of development

MEET THE EARLY CHILDHOOD STAFF!

The Early Childhood School Day
For health and safety reasons children in Early Childhood classes should not arrive at school before 07.45.
Please note that children in Early Childhood and Junior sections must be collected promptly at the end of the day. Parents will be telephoned at 14.45 if their child is still on site. The school reserves the right to transport the child to the parent’s location by taxi at the expense of the parent. These measures are in the interest of the health and safety of the children.
Please also take a look at the notes regarding access to the site when dropping off and picking up your child.
TIMETABLE

A TYPICAL EARLY CHILDHOOD DAY
A typical day in the early years section begins at 8am with registration and a carpet session to explain the programme for the day. Break includes a snack and playtime.
Morning lessons finish at 12.15am for Years 1 and 2 and this is followed by lunch. At 12.45 the children have a ‘Together Time’. During this session the children can enjoy listening to stories and learning some songs and rhymes. Our afternoon finishes at 1.45 when most children go home. Children with older siblings can take advantage of our after hours supervision until 2.30pm when the secondary children finish classes.
