Waiting Lists
Children are placed on a waiting list if there is no space available at the time of registration. Registration, i.e. deposit of completed enrolment forms, secures the place on the list. The school operates two waiting lists, one for Seychellois and one for Expatriates. Admission to each class is from alternate lists.
The Sibling Rule
Children move up the list in strict order, as places become available, however priority is given to families who already have children in the school (brothers or sisters to the child waiting). This is known as the “sibling rule”.
Class Placement
Admission to the school is made according to the age of the child on the 1st September of the year of entry. This policy is not normally negotiable, however, in exceptional circumstances a child may, at the discretion of the head teacher, be placed in a class different to that determined by age. This may be because the child joins the school from a different educational system and may have missed some schooling, or it may be the case that a child with a low standard of English is initially placed in a lower class. In all cases the needs of each child are considered carefully and the final decision regarding placement is made in his or her best educational interests. The school has a ‘two form entry’ policy. With a target class size of 25, this means that each academic year has circa 50 students.
Admission to the Sixth Form
There are two admissions per academic year. The first is at the start of the IS academic year, in September. This is when the majority of students transferring to the sixth form will commence studies. The second, smaller, entry takes place in the January of any year, in other words at the start of term two of the IS academic year. This is to enable students taking IGCSEs or O-levels at other institutions the previous November to join the programme.
Students entering the sixth form should have achieved a minimum of 5 higher level (grade B and above) results at IGCSE level, or the equivalent. Additionally, students will need to obtain a grade B pass at extended level before they can enrol on an A level course in any chosen subject.
Students commencing studies in September will normally sit final examinations in June two years hence, thus a student joining in September 2008 will normally complete the programme in June 20010. Students commencing the programme in the January of 2009 (for example) will normally be assessed in November 2010.
The Fee Structure
Fees are calculated in respect of a programme of study followed for any one academic year or, once the student enters year 10, the two year IGCSE programme. AS/A2 fees are calculated in respect of the two year Advanced level programme. All fees are payable termly in advance. Fees cover all tuition, text books, exercise books, consumable materials and most specialist coaching in physical education. Fees also cover participation in the school’s extra curriculum programme. The cost of many school trips in Seychelles will be covered by school fees. Fees do not cover school uniform costs, purchases from the tuck shop, some school trips (including those overseas) or scuba diving courses (available in upper secondary classes).
Registration
The Registration Form is available for collection from the school office, or by post on request.
