Dear parents

Half term is fast approaching and yet there are still so many exciting things happening in the Reception classes!

Baby Gym sessions have started with great success, with the children enjoying a variety of exercises and using the specialist equipment.

Please remember to collect your child from the Baby Gym at Roche Caiman at 1.45p.m.

Please note – R2J will now have the Baby Gym session on a Monday morning. The school bus will provide transport to and from Roche Caiman for this class.

All of the Reception One children visited the Wharf Marina this week, where they were able to see a variety of boats and were very excited when they were invited to ‘Come Aboard’

The trip prompted a great deal of discussion. Many thanks to the parents who came along to help make the trip a great morning out!

R2 children were disappointed not to be able to go on their trip to the Wharf, which had to be postponed due to the wet weather.

Swimming sessions for Reception One will begin on Wednesday 28th May, starting with R1V.

This Week’s Topic              This week, we continued to look at road safety, as well as safety in cars, on bikes, aeroplanes and boats.  The airport departure area in R2 has been transformed into an aeroplane, with the children playing the roles of steward and stewardess, pilot captain and first officer, not forgetting the all important passengers too! All passengers ensured they had their passports with them and flight socks and masks to help them sleep were available.

Mia’s father, Simon, came into R2 to talk about his role as First Officer at Air Seychelles and we’d like to thank him for giving a well thought out talk, complete with visual aids, which prompted much discussion and
  new vocabulary.

We began to learn about space travel and many wonderful rockets have been
created from junk materials. Show and Tell items included beautiful drawings and models, and non-fiction books about space travel were displayed.

Please check out the school website for photos of the different events taking place for Reception children. You can also read this newsletter on line.

  Have a good weekend!

This Week’s Topic
This week, we discussed road safety. We looked at safe places to cross the road and R1 even practiced with their own zebra crossing in the class!
All classes continued exploring boats, with R1J making sail boats from Styrofoam and R2J exploring which materials made the boats that floatz best. The children had great fun testing their creations in the water tray.
The children have been learning to make boats and aeroplanes from origami, making models from junk and in R2J the children have made papier mache hot air balloons!
R2L have made wonderful little car shaped books about vehicles and R1V have been using the shapes they are learning, to make boat pictures.
The airport departure area in R2 has been very popular.
Most children have now made their own passports and many tickets to Australia, Mauritius and other far flung places have been issued to the many passengers who fly from the terminal at International School!
Please take a look around your child’s class if you would like to see what the children have been doing – the displays are colourful and informative.

Dear Parents,
Every week, we try to give you a taster of what your children have been learning in school. Parents often tell us that when they ask their children ‘what did you do at school today?’ the children answer “I don’t know” or “nothing”. We hope the newsletter helps!
We have been working hard behind the scenes to provide your children with enhanced opportunities for developing their physical development. Swimming lessons begin for R1 at the end of May and we have arranged for each Reception class to visit the Baby Gym facility run by the Seychelles Sports Council once a week.
You will receive separate letters giving more details of the arrangements for these in the coming week. Both activities are funded by the school and incur no cost to you.
We have organised a trip to the Wharf to view the yachts and boats moored there. R1 will go on the 21st May and R2 will go on the 23rd May.
There will also be a trip to the Domestic airport for R2 on 2nd June and R1 on the 3rd June. We will be taking a close look at the planes and helicopters.
You will receive a letter with more details and a permission slip attached for both of these trips shortly.

Reception News 9.05.08
This Week’s Topic
This week, we continued with our topic on Journeys, with the main focus being different modes of transport.
The children in Reception Two were learning about solid (3D) shapes. They made model vehicles using cuboids and cylinders and used flat shapes to make windows, steering wheels and doors. The children enjoyed making vehicles by printing with cylinders and cuboids and went looking for cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cubes and cones in the outdoor environment.
Reception One were also learning about shapes – circles, squares, triangles and rectangles and using them to make patterns. They printed with wheels, made buses from wooden blocks and used the flat shapes to make cars and other transport.
We have been finding out about maps and locating where we live on Mahe. The children made charts to show the different transport we use to get to school.
We enjoyed the story of Rosie’s Walk and practised using the words under, over, around, through and between to describe her journey.
We practised these movements in the gym on the large equipment.

Next Week:

Next week we will be learning about Road Safety.
Home Learning

  • Practise crossing the road safely with your child, looking for the safe places to cross

  • Explain the need for seatbelts in cars and teach your child how to put them on.

Show and Tell:

  • Paint or draw the places that are safe to cross in Victoria

  • Find a poem or song about road safety

  • Go on a road safety walk and take photos of the safe places to cross

Every week:

  • Practice the word walls and/or sound sheets regularly. Play ‘I Spy’ with the initial sounds

  • Share a book together at bedtime. This will encourage a love of books and reading, help your child to acquire early reading skills and establish a good bedtime routine

  • Use every day life opportunities to practice counting, simple addition and subtraction, number recognition, writing numerals and letters. This will help your child with mathematical development in a meaningful way

Have a good weekend!
