ARCHIVE ENTRY CONCERNING THE AIRTEL ARTS IN SCHOOLS PROJECT WHICH OCCUPIED ISS STUDENTS OF ALL AGES MOST SATURDAYS FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR DURING 2007.

Paintings for the Barbarons Hotel

Normally when a hotel is refurbished or built art work for the rooms and public areas is commissioned or purchased in bulk. Often what a guest sees in his or her room is virtually identical to the art works seen in every other room. In order to avoid this, and create a unique and exciting art project, the architect and Airtel asked the International School whether its students would be interested in creating original art works for the Barbarons Hotel.

Once the framework of the project was agreed students at the school from Primary through to sixth term and the National College of the Arts were invited to participate in the project. Each student has made between one and ten canvases, most ranging in size from 60 x 60 cms to 90 x 120cms (although some are larger). The work has all been made on Saturdays and holidays, with students working with teachers and artists. Colbert Nourrice, Barbara Jenson, Martin Kennedy, Nayna Kennedy and Heather Maund have taught and advised students during the lessons.

Two themes were introduced ‘Land and Sea’, - in both cases the paintings reflect the Seychelles environment, and students (an eclectic mix of 20 nationalities) were encouraged to represent the islands through colour, form, motif and pattern. Students were asked to create a personal response to the themes, and to represent their home environment and its atmosphere, ambience and beauty.
